Serve

We are a church in mission with opportunities to serve for all ages.

We believe God gives each of us different talents to use for His glory and calls us to be in mission to our church, community, and world. Below are a few of our many ways to serve the church and community.

In the Church

  • Children’s Ministry

Are you interested in serving the children in our church? Opportunities range from leading Sunday School and other small groups to serving meals. All volunteers go through a background check and Safe Sanctuaries training before being paired with students.

  • Congregational Care

Share Christian love with our friends and neighbors in need of care. Serving opportunities include, but are not limited to:

    • Bereavement Ministry – Contact Beth Buchanan

    • Caring Friends Ministry

    • Covenant Prayer Group – Contact Church Office

    • Murray First Prayer Chain – Contact Jan Nutter

    • Prayer Shawl Ministry – Contact Debra Fannin

  • Student Ministry

Are you interested in serving the young people in our church?  Opportunities range for serving in small groups and teaching Sunday school to serving meals.  All volunteers go through a background check and Safe Sanctuaries training before being paired with students.

  • Worship

There are many ways you can use your spiritual gifts to serve God through Worship.  We have opportunities to volunteer on Sundays, during the week, on a weekly/monthly basis, or as your schedule allows.  Contact the church office at info@murrayfirst.org to learn more.  Here is a list of a few opportunities:

    o   Sanctuary stewards

In the Community

  • Blood Drive

Murray First UMC hosts two blood drives each year in the CLC Gymnasium. FUMC is a member of the Blood Donor Group Program of the Murray Calloway County Hospital. When FUMC has fulfilled the yearly quota of blood units any member of the congregation’s family requiring transfusion receives it at a lower cost and a reliable blood supply is available for the community when needed. For additional information contact Melissa Easley at 270-753-8096.

  • Community Kitchen Feeding Program

The community kitchen serves lunch to those in our community on Sundays at 12:30 PM. This is a great ministry and volunteer opportunity. Contact Aileen Leslie.

  • HELP Ministry

His Everlasting Love Provides (HELP) is the benevolence ministry of First United Methodist Church. HELP assists those in need within the community with a wide variety of services through partnership with other community organizations. The HELP Ministry also provides food boxes to those in need through the Feeding America Program once a month (usually the first Wednesday of the month at 4 PM). This is one of the many ways you can volunteer in this ministry. Contact the church office at 270-753-3812 to learn more.

  • Eunice’s Food Ministry

Monthly food packing at Need Line. Contact Terese Shemwell or Kathy Payne to learn more.

  • Kids Care for Hunger Program

Feeding program for children and families in the community. Contact Judy Stahler.

In the world

  • Appalachian Mission Trip

The four-day Appalachia Mission Trip to the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky is held annually in the Spring. Working with Henderson Settlement, a United Methodist Ministry in Frakes, Kentucky, the team engages itself in home repair in the community, thrift store and greenhouse operations on the “campus”, and conduct a two-day dental clinic.
