Position Reports to: Senior Pastor and Traditional Worship Director
Employment Status: Part-time/Non-exempt

Position Summary:
The Church Organist is responsible for providing excellent quality in musical accompaniment for the congregation, chancel choir, and other musical ensembles, primarily for the traditional worship service, including rehearsal and planning time, in addition to special services in accordance with the job description.

+ Congregational Hymns & Choral Anthems

  • Provide accompaniment from the pipe organ or piano, under the direction of the Senior Pastor and Traditional Worship Director, who selects the hymns and choral anthems for the service.
  • Rehearse and perform with the chancel choir according to the schedule set by the Traditional Worship Director.

+ Other Routine Special Music Pieces

  • Select, prepare, and perform music for preludes, offertories, and postludes.
  • Choose pieces with attention to thematic connections based on the projected Scriptures, sermon themes, and hymns for the worship services.
  • Incorporate a variety of styles, including classical, hymn-based, gospel, and other genres, with appeal to the diverse capabilities of the pipe organ.
  • Collaborate with the Traditional Worship Director, choir members, and others in identifying vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles, especially for offertory pieces.
  • Rehearse and perform with soloists and groups, as needed.

+ Special Services

  • Provide or arrange for accompaniment at funerals and weddings at the church, as needed.
  • Under the planning and direction of the Senior Pastor and Traditional Worship Director, accompany the congregation and chancel choir for seasonal services. These may include, but not necessarily limited to: Hanging of the Green; Advent or Christmas Cantata; Christmas Eve service; Ash Wednesday; Holy Week services.

+ Qualifications

  • Extensive organ and piano experience is required.
  • Familiarity with choral and solo accompaniment is expected.
  • A background in musical education is preferred.
  • Familiarity with United Methodist musical resources is preferred.

+ Key Competencies and Expectations

  • Punctual attendance at the traditional worship service as well as rehearsals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others on staff, choir members, and the congregation.
  • Displaying a positive and enthusiastic influence upon those associated with the presentation of music, especially in the worship of God.
  • Attendance encouraged at professional development seminars and conferences.
  • Adherence to all personnel policies and conduct in a professional, Christian manner.
